1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East will hold its annual “Peace on the Streets: Stop the Violence March and Rally” on Thursday, Sept. 29, at 5:30 p.m., beginning on Dewey Ave. and Driving Park.
The rally and march have been held every year since 2007, in honor of Latasha Shaw, a 36-year-old mother and university of Rochester employee who was beaten and stabbed to death during a gang assault, while attempting to come to the aid of her 12-year-old daughter.
“It has been nine years since Latasha Shaw was murdered at the intersection of Dewey Avenue and Driving Park, beaten by a mob in broad daylight,” SEIU said in a statement. “Latasha Shaw worked as a cook at the University of Rochester, where she was a leader in the union. She was a mother, and dedicated to her family. Each year since her death, we have gathered to re-dedicate ourselves to stopping the violence in our community. With recent news from across our nation, it is more important than ever that we say: ‘Stop the violence.’ Join us as we rally for ‘Peace in the Streets.’”
Following Shaw’s murder, out of the two individuals who were charged in connection with the crime, one was acquitted, and the other’s conviction was reversed.
