POSITION: Family Peer Mentor (Full-time; Non-exempt)

*Must have a NYS Family Peer Advocate Certification*

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Provide community connections and identify natural supports for parents and caretakers of youth with emotional, social, and/or behavioral issues
•Conduct family orientations
•Facilitate a monthly support and networking group for parents and caretakers
•Document all services and contacts; compile statistics monthly and annually
•Provide person-centered, culturally responsive customer service to all clients, volunteers, staff, and community partners
•Reports to Manager of Youth and Family Services

Creating Connections
•Outreach to and engage with parents and caretakers within Compeer as well as the broader community through direct correspondence, presentations, and marketing materials
•Refer families out to needed resources not provided by Compeer, or better provided elsewhere
•Attend client activities

One Team, One Mission
•Collaborate with internal and external members of youth and family treatment team
•Conduct outreach in the community on behalf of other Compeer programs (ambassadorship)
•Demonstrate willingness to take on additional responsibilities with the agency and in the community
•Represent Compeer in a professional manner both internally and out in the community (this includes written and spoken language, attitude, appearance and dress)
•Maintain positive communication and relationships with co-workers

•Demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for the diverse cultural backgrounds of the youth and family served
•Maintain self-care
•Manage daily tasks with little or no prompting from Supervisor
•Demonstrate organization and effective, efficient use of time and agency resources
•Show willingness to accept responsibility for errors while taking corrective action and ability to use and accept constructive criticism appropriately
•Demonstrate reliability through attendance, punctuality, and timely responses

Sharing Knowledge and Expertise
•Inspire hope and give energy to family members who are dealing with environmental, situational, and emotional stressors
•Help families learn to navigate systems, while teaching self-advocacy
•Demonstrate flexibility and creativity when faced with challenges
•Offer the parent perspective in internal and external meetings; provide education as necessary
•Demonstrate willingness to gain additional knowledge in field

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
•Must have lived experience as parent or primary caretaker of a child who has utilized mental health, substance abuse, foster care, social services, and/or similar youth systems, and be willing to speak about this experience
•Provisional or Permanent Family Peer Advocate Credential required (free training available)
•High School Diploma or equivalent is required
•Knowledge and practice of strength-based, person-centered approach is required
•Knowledge of local systems is required
•Basic computer skills and Microsoft Office proficiency required; Microsoft Excel and Access knowledge preferred
•Must have valid driver’s license, safe driving record, and reliable transportation
•Bi-lingual English/Spanish candidates strongly encouraged to apply

HOURS: 35-40 hours per week; flexible. Some evenings and weekends required.
