Beau Biden, Vice President’s Son and Former Attorney General of Delaware, Dies

By Staff

bbidenJoseph “Beau” Biden III, son of Vice President Joe Biden, Iraq war veteran, and the former attorney general of Delaware, died Saturday at age 46, the White House said in a statement.

The vice president’s son died after a long battle with brain cancer, the vice president’s office said.

“The entire Biden family is saddened beyond words,” said Vice President Biden. “We know that Beau’s spirit will live on in all of us—especially through his brave wife, Hallie, and two remarkable children, Natalie and Hunter. Beau’s life was defined by service to others. As a young lawyer, he worked to establish the rule of law in war-torn Kosovo. A major in the Delaware National Guard, he was an Iraq War veteran, and was awarded the Bronze Star. As Delaware’s Attorney General, he fought for the powerless, and made it his mission to protect children from abuse.”

“Beau took after Joe,” President Barack Obama said in a statement. “He studied the law, like his dad, even choosing the same law school. He chased a life of public service, like his dad, serving in Iraq, and as Delaware’s Attorney General. Like his dad, Beau was a good, big-hearted, devoutly Catholic, and deeply faithful man, who made a difference in the lives of all he touched – and he lives on in their hearts.”

Beau reportedly began having health problems in 2010 after suffering a stroke, and had been diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013.

He was treated at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, after becoming disoriented and weak while on vacation. Following the diagnosis, Biden underwent surgery, and had been in remission from the disease until the cancer returned this spring.

He died Saturday evening, surrounded by his family, reports stated.

Biden is survived by his wife, Hallie; two children, Natalie and Hunter; a brother, also named Hunter; half-sister, Ashley; stepmother Jill Biden; and father, Vice President Joe Biden.

“More than his professional accomplishments, Beau measured himself as a husband, father, son and brother,” Vice President Biden said. “His absolute honor made him a role model for our family.”

Biden had first been elected attorney general in 2006, winning by 13,000 votes. When he was re-elected in 2010, he won by 149,000 votes over his GOP competitor. He served as Delaware’s attorney general from 2007 to 2015.
