New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx), plans to begin an upstate tour Tuesday, July 21, officials from Heastie’s office stated.
Heastie will begin his tour in Syracuse, where he will meet with Mayor Stephanie Miner, one of the governor’s toughest critics.
“She’s the mayor of a major city, and it’s a good chance to learn about the needs of the city,” Heastie spokesman Michael Whyland stated in a New York Post article.
The speaker had reportedly decided to tour the region, in order to familiarize himself with upstate, both geographically and politically, following the end of the 2015 legislative session.
Assemblyman William Magnarelli will join Heastie and Miner at the meeting. Heastie has also been scheduled to visit a local school, a hospital, Syracuse University, and to meet with local business owners, according to officials.
In addition, Wednesday, Heastie will visit Watertown, and nearby Fort Drum. He has also planned trips to Ithaca, Binghamton, Rochester and Buffalo later this summer.
The Assembly’s Democratic majority elected Heastie as speaker earlier this year, as as replacement for former speaker Sheldon Silver, who stepped down from the post due to his arrest on federal corruption charges.
