In April, the city selected Morgan Communities and the Rochester Broadway Theater League (RBTL) to develop the new Golisano Center for the Performing Arts at the Parcel 5 site, and City Council is currently reviewing the community’s input regarding the project.
“We’re not opposed to the RBTL proposal,” ROC Citizen organizer Ravi Mangla stated. “We just don’t feel that Parcel 5 is the best site for it.”
According to Mangla, the purpose of the forum was to highlight the need for a community-oriented process to decide what project should ultimately be placed at the Midtown site.
A few dozen attendees attended the event, which featured short videos as well as a panel discussion, including panelists Maria Furgiuele, the executive director of Community Design Center; Shawn Dunwoody, a local artist and entrepreneur; and Arian Horbovetz, editor of The Urban Phoenix blog.
Mangla said the group also invited each Rochester City Council member and Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren to attend the event, but many of the officials declined.
