Jazz-Brunch-2016_Fortitude_FinalFlyer-newThe Rochester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has selected Patricia Rector-Holloman, nurse coordinator of the Rochester City School District’s Nurse Assistant Program, and Yahoda Miller, youth educator and garden manager with the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, as recipients of its 2016 Keeper of the Flame Award, in recognition of community service.

Rector-Holloman and Miller will receive the award during the chapter’s 15th Annual Jazz Brunch Sunday, May 1, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Rochester.

Delta Sigma Theta will host the event in affiliation with its Delta Research and Education Foundation.

Rector-Holloman has been active in the community, according to Delta Sigma officials, not only as a nurse, but as a health educator and healthy life-style advocate.

In addition, she has also been involved in establishing a neighborhood walking program, conducting a series of diabetes prevention workshops, and developing, in partnership with the University of Rochester School of Nursing, a health literacy education program for nurse assistant students, and the faith-based community.

Miller, a 2014 graduate of Wilson Magnet High School, has also worked with adults and school-age young people in a variety of ways, the group said, including teaching students how to resolve conflict through nonviolent solutions, conducting gardening and healthy food workshops for senior citizens, and working with his students and the Rochester Institute of Technology to design a special greenhouse that will produce food all year.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority presents its Keeper of the Flame Award annually, in recognition of individuals or institutions that continue to keep alive a tradition of contributions that represent African heritage, while fulfilling the highest standards of integrity and excellence, the organization stated.

Net proceeds from the Delta Jazz Brunch will support the organization’s Maude Orman Scholarship Fund, and the group’s local community service projects.
