Professional Background: Jessica Lewis is the principal publicist and owner of LáLew Public Relations. Her passion for public relations began in college, and she has more than 10 years of experience in her field.
While she was an undergraduate student at Buffalo State College, she served as the president of an on-campus club called Black Active Minds, which led student meetings around pressing issues such as race, equality and social justice.
Lewis often found herself engaging in meaningful conversations with her peers, and would promote club activities and publicize special events.
Years later, those experiences, coupled with her professional experiences, would come full circle, with the launch of her own public relations company, LáLew Public Relations.
She manages RTF’s communications initiatives by developing and executing, comprehensive, integrated communications for funders, conveners, networks, community based organizations, and neighborhood residents.
Prior to joining ROC the Future, she’d served as the communications specialist for the Urban-Suburban Transfer Program, the nation’s first and oldest school-based integration program.
There, she served as a 50th anniversary steering committee member, and had the pleasure of emceeing the Urban-Suburban 50th anniversary gala with Adam Chodak of WROC News 8.
In 2008, Lewis was also named director of after school programs at the Urban League of Rochester.
She coordinated five college and career programs that served Rochester area youth in that capacity, and managed funding totaling $400,000.
The programs consistently surpassed outcomes and goals under her direction, earning her the 2012 Employee of the Year award.
Lewis has also received her bachelor’s degree in social studies education, in grades seven through 12, from Buffalo State College, and a master’s degree in teaching and curriculum from the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education, at the University of Rochester.
She also holds membership in the Rochester Association of Black Journalists, the Democrat and Chronicle Young Professionals Advisory Council, and the Theta Omega Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
Lewis is a proud member of Greater Adams Street Church of God By Faith, and is a teacher in the Youth Academy children’s church.
Her favorite quote is a scripture from Romans 8:28:
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose for them.”
She also enjoys gospel music, and listening to the sounds of Tasha Cobbs and JeKalyn Carr.
Lewis is an avid traveler, and has traveled to Italy, Greece, Antigua, Puerto Rico, as well as several U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Memphis, Chicago, Charlotte, and Las Vegas.
She said her favorite things to do are watch movies; dine at local restaurants, and shop.
