Foodlink to Launch Awareness Campaign for Hunger Action Month

foodlinkSeptember is Hunger Action Month, and Rochester Foodlink will join the Feeding America network of food banks to raise awareness of its campaign, and inspire people to take action against hunger this month.

“Hunger Action Month is an opportunity for Foodlink to shine a light on the reality that too many people in our region, especially children, do not have access to enough healthy food,” Foodlink’s executive director Julia Tedesco stated. “This month, we’re urging everyone in our community to raise their voice, take action, and join Foodlink in our mission to end hunger.”

Throughout the month, Foodlink and Feeding America will be asking supporters to raise awareness by considering how it might feel to live with an empty stomach, and to use social media in the fight against hunger.

A pair of printable, empty plates with fill-in-the-blank statements are available on the organization’s website.

They read: “On an empty stomach I can’t _________.” and “But I can _______ to help end hunger.”

The organization is asking participants to fill in the blanks, take a photo, and share the images on social media, with the hashtags #HungerActionMonth and @foodlinkny.

In addition, Foodlink’s “Fill the Bus Food Drive” will take place at local Wegmans supermarkets from Sept. 9 to Sept. 24, which will allow shoppers to donate to the organization’s BackPack Program, and provide food for children on weekends, when they may not have access to school meals, officials from the group stated.

“I’ve spent many days on the road this past year, visiting food banks, food pantries, and meal programs and meeting people who are facing hunger,” Diana Aviv, CEO of Feeding America, stated. “I’ve seen firsthand the anguish that food insecurity, and hunger, can cause. It is always heartbreaking to meet a mother or father who fears that they will not be able to feed their children. They know that their children cannot reach their full potential if they don’t have enough to eat.”

Foodlink will also hold its largest fundraiser, the Festival of Food, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m, Sept. 19, at the city of Rochester’s Public Market. The event will feature more than 100 top food and drink vendors from the Rochester and Finger Lakes area.

Tickets are currently on sale at www.foodlinkny.org, and at Wegmans.

More than 48 million Americans, including 15 million children, are considered food-insecure, meaning their households, at times, lack access to an adequate supply of nutritious food.

In the organization’s 10-county service area, more than 1 in 8 people, or nearly 160,000 individuals overall, struggle with the issue, which includes more than 57,000 children.

Foodlink and other organization’s across the country will begin to focus their efforts for greater impact Sept. 8, on Hunger Action Day. According to Foodlink, the group will also encourage community members to wear orange that day, in support of its campaign.
