Greece Police Department Officer Eric Hughes shot and killed a man who had been identified as a missing person at The Mall at Greece Ridge Center, Monday, June 1, according to Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan.
Phelan said the man, who police have only identified as being a white male between the ages of 20 to 40 years old, had been reported missing, when police spotted him in the mall’s parking lot near Sears department store, Saturday, at around 3.pm.
After the officer approached the man, Phelan said he threatened the officer with a loaded handgun. An altercation followed, until Hughes reportedly shot the individual, fatally.
Phelan said the man’s family had reported him missing earlier that day, and was concerned he may have been suicidal.
“We had been looking for him to check on his mental health,” Phelan stated.
He said Hughes is a school resource officer, and a 15-year veteran of the department.
No officers were injured during the incident, and Phelan said Hughes has been placed on administrative leave while police continue to investigate the matter.
Police had no comment on a partial video of the shooting which had been posted online.
In addition, mall officials have released the following statement regarding the matter:
“We are cooperating with the Greece Police Department regarding this incident. This was an isolated, unfortunate occurrence. Mall shoppers and tenants were never in any danger as the incident was quickly contained in the overflow lot, at the Southwest end of the property. Our thoughts go out to the families of everyone involved.”
