Injured NYPD Officer Dies after Shooting

By Staff

Moore BrianNew York City Police Department Officer Brian Moore, who was shot in Queens over the weekend, has died, according to New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Moore, 25, and his partner, Erik Jansen, 30, had both been on duty, and in plainclothes, at the time of the shooting. They pulled up behind a man police have identified as Demetrius Blackwell, 35, in an unmarked vehicle.

According to Police Commissioner Bill Bratton, the officers spotted Blackwell “adjusting an object in his waistband,” and when Moore asked Blackwell what he had been doing, police said he allegedly pulled out a gun and fired twice into the police car.

Moore was rushed to the hospital, where he died Monday.

Blackwell had been arrested Sunday, and charged with two counts of attempted murder.

“The shooting of Officer Brian Moore over the weekend was a deplorable act of violence that has robbed New York of one of its finest,” Gov. Cuomo said in a statement. “As a member of the NYPD, Officer Moore put the safety of his fellow New Yorkers before his own, and we will remember his service with gratitude and pride. I join with all New Yorkers in mourning his passing and send my deepest condolences to his friends and family.”

Moore had reportedly joined the force in 2010, and his father and uncle had both been retired NYPD sergeants.

Moore is the first NYPD officer killed in the line of duty since officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were fatally shot in their patrol car in the city in December.
