In local election news, 87-year-old Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-Fairport, has defeated republican Gates Town Supervisor Mark Assini in a bid to keep the seat she’s held for the past 30 years in the state’s 25th Congressional District.

Slaughter won the race with 56 percent of the vote Nov. 8.

“We talked about progress being on the ballot, and, whatever happens here, we’re not going back,” she stated. “We’re not going to fall into any kind of traps that we’re going to be moving back in any direction that we’ve already covered.”

Former Irondequoit Town Supervisor Adam Bello will also remain in the position of Monroe County Clerk, after defeating Republican candidate Cheryl Rozzi with 58 percent of the vote on Tuesday.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed Bello to the position earlier this year, after former Monroe County Clerk Cheryl Dinolfo was elected as Monroe County executive.

In September, Bello sparked controversy, after accusing the clerk’s office of granting over 600 people illegal fee waivers under Dinolfo’s administration.

“We’re turning around the management of the office, we’re making it work again, and we’re finding ways that the office can really help people,” Bello stated.

U.S. Sen Charles Schumer (D-NY) has also won another term in office, beating out Republican candidate Wendy Long for his seat, with 70 percent of the vote on Tuesday, winning a fourth term in the Senate.

Schumer is also in line to replace retiring Nevada Sen. Harry Reid as leader of Senate Democrats next year.

In other local races, GOP candidate Joe Errigo has won 57 percent of the vote to succeed the late Bill Nojay in the 133rd Assembly District, and Democratic incumbent Assemblyman Harry Bronson has been re-elected to his seat in the 138th Assembly District.

Democratic candidate Maritza Buitrago has also lost her candidacy for Monroe County Court Judge to Republican candidate Stacey Romeo, and Democratic Candidate Melissa Barrett has lost her bid for county judgeship to Republican candidate Sam Valleriani.
