Update 2/29: National Urban League President Marc Morial will give the University of Rochester’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Address at the school, Feb. 29. Previously, Morial had been scheduled to give the address in January, but the school postponed the event due to severe weather conditions.
Morial will speak in the Larry and Cindy Bloch Alumni and Advancement Center, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m, at 300 E. River Road. Admission will be free, and the event will be open to the public. He will also take questions from the audience following the address.
Update: The Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Address National Urban League president Marc Morial was scheduled to give at the University of Rochester Jan. 23, has been postponed due to severe weather conditions, officials from the school stated.
The U of R said it will likely reschedule Morial’s talk for a new date next month.
Marc Morial president of the National Urban League and former mayor of New Orleans, will deliver the University of Rochester’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Address Saturday, Jan. 23, university officials stated.
Morial will speak at 6 p.m. at Strong Auditorium on the River Campus, then take questions from the audience until 7 p.m.
Admission will be free and open to the public. Free parking will be available along Wilson Blvd.
Morial has been president of the National Urban League, one of the nation’s oldest civil rights organizations, since 2003. During that time, he oversaw a five-year, $280 million fundraising effort, and, in 2013, launched a five-year “Jobs Rebuild America: Educate, Employ, Empower” initiative, according to a press release.
In addition, prior to serving as Urban League president, he also served as mayor of New Orleans for eight years. His approval ranged from 70 percent to 100 percent among black residents during his term in office, the university said.
“We are honored to have Marc Morial serve as our Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Address speaker this year,” Norman Burnett, dean and director of the office of minority student affairs, stated. “The National Urban League, and its local affiliates, continue to provide our country with strong leadership around racial equality as it relates to economics, social justice, health, and civil engagement – all areas that resonate with our politically astute student community.”
The office of minority student affairs, and the office of the president are co-sponsors of the event.
