Former WROC-TV news anchor Rachel Barnhart has officially announced she will run for Harry Bronson’s seat (D-Rochester) in the 138th Assembly District.
Reportedly, Barnhart left her job at WROC in May, amidst rumors she was planning to switch to a career in politics.
She will challenge Bronson in a primary election Sept. 13.
According to an article in the Democrat and Chronicle, Bronson said he would be glad to present his record to the public, if he were challenged in a primary race.
In addition, Barnhart said she will reveal more about her plans in the future.
“I just left my job less than two weeks ago, and I was forbidden to participate in political activity as a journalist,” she stated. “So, there’s an incredible amount of work to do to launch a campaign.”
Bronson has already begun his re-election campaign, and has received endorsements from the Monroe County Democratic Committee, as well as Mayor Lovely Warren.
GOP candidates Robert Zinck and Peter Vazquez have also planned to run for the seat.
