The newest 21 students in the scholarship program, which covers full tuition for eligible Rochester City School District students, will be from School of the Arts, Wilson Commencement, Edison, East, Franklin/Vanguard Collegiate, World of Inquiry, and School Without Walls high schools, as well as Rochester Academy, and University Prep Charter Schools.
The students’ current majors will include biology, business, mechanical engineering technology, video game design, photography, and computer engineering.
Since RIT established the initiative in 2010, more than 120 city students have attended the school, and received full scholarships toward their degree programs.
RIT President Bill Destler, and his wife, Rebecca Johnson, are the founders of the program, and, although Destler is slated to retire at the end of the 2016-17 school year, the Destlers pledged a $1 million endowment to the program, in order to ensure the future of the fund.
