Rochester Police Department Officer Christine Wilson has recently been awarded the Carnegie Hero Award, from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission, for saving four children from a burning vehicle November 23, 2013.
Wilson had been off-duty when she witnessed an accident involving a minivan in Henrietta, and helped remove the children from the burning vehicle, along with area resident Frank DiStefano, before it became consumed by flames.
“I just did what I thought any ordinary person would have done,” Wilson stated. “I’m just thankful that I’m here to tell the story in a positive manner as well.”
The award is one of the highest awards a civilian can receive in the United States and Canada, according to the commission, and Wilson has been one of 20 individuals to receive the award this year.
