Something to Think About: It’s Time to Pray!

Op/Ed By Michael Vaughn

michael_vaughn2When we’ve looked across our world, country, and community, we’ve seen there are situations which have shaken the foundation of what we’ve held dear, including life itself!

Over in the Middle East, we’ve heard how ISIL has been mercilessly killing Christians, and those they’ve believed stood against that in which they believe.

Here, in America, there has also been tremendous tension between African-Americans and the police, because of a string of questionable actions which have resulted in the deaths of several African-American men.

In addition, there have been forces at work trying to redefine marriage, and the sanctity of it.

There have also been people getting murdered at all times of the day in our community, as well as violence that is continuing to occur at the downtown transit center.

The list goes on and on, from the world, to the nation, to our community.

And, with everything that has been going on, there have also been well-meaning people who are trying to come up with solutions to the problems we’re facing.

However, as someone who has held his beliefs in the word of God, I have believed all of our solutions, no matter how well-intended, will come to naught, if not seasoned in prayer.

According to scripture,If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2 Chr. 7:14 (KJV).”

If we want to see real solutions in our land, we will need to do three major things. First, we will need to humble ourselves. We will need to realize we do not have the answer, and that the solution can only come from our creator, Father God.

Second, we will need to pray. Prayer will mean inviting God into our situations. And, once we have come to understand we have been incapable of solving these problems on our own, we must call out to Him, and get His wisdom and strength to work through these tough problems. Third, we will need to repent, and turn from our wicked ways.

There are things which have been done in America that are against God, and we need a concerted effort to stop them, i.e., abortion, pornography, rape, molestation, murder, etc. The scripture has provided a promise that, if we humble ourselves, and pray, then turn from our wicked ways; our prayers will be heard, and our land will be healed. I believe this!

While, indeed, it has been important to make sure we’ve all prayed individually, having a corporate prayer will add another level of connection, and power, to the prayer.

We will have this opportunity to come together, corporately, on May 7, 2015, during the National Day of Prayer. Here, in our community, we will be meeting at City Hall, at 11:15 a.m. Then, beginning at 11:45 a.m., we will form a human prayer chain around City Hall, and the county office building, in order to lift up our community, and the nation, in prayer.

This would be a great time to come together, and recognize the need for inviting God into our situations. He is ready to help us, but has been looking for an invitation. If we’ve recognized, with our own intellect and strength, that we have been unable to resolve these issues we’ve faced; he will have the answer, and we will need to seek Him for the wisdom of it, and the strength to implement it.

This National Day of Prayer will only be the beginning. From here, we will be looking for change to occur in our community, our nation, and the world. And, as the body of Christ comes together, we will have tremendous impact on the earth. Yet, it will begin with our submitting, and committing, ourselves to pray.

This will be a very important time for our country, and our world. We need to pray! There will be no better time than right now. May 7, 2015 will be the designated day for this community to come together, and invite God into our situations. I hope to see you there!
