State to Offer More Free, Tax-Filing Assistance Sites

By Staff

taxformspencil_Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced the opening of 85 additional free, tax-filing assistance sites across the state, including three in Monroe County.

The new locations will add to the expanding network of sites that help eligible New Yorkers file timely and accurate returns at no charge, the state said.

The new sites will offer 1,200 morning, evening, and weekend sessions, and each location will be staffed by State Department of Taxation and Finance workers who are available to assist individuals and families who earned less than $62,000 in 2015.

Eligible individuals should bring:

  • a copy of federal and state tax returns from last year (if filed);
  • a picture ID (such as a driver’s license, a passport, or, in NYC, an IDNYC);
  • an affordable healthcare statement (Form 1095-A, Form 1095-B, or Form 1095-C);
  • a health insurance exemption certificate (if received);
  • information related to any claimed credits;
  • bank account and routing numbers (for the directly deposit of a refund);
  • and proof of income.

Select sites will also offer staff who speak languages including Chinese, Spanish, or Russian.

Appointments at the locations are recommended, but walk-ins will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, the state said.

“Every hard-working New Yorker should be able to benefit from all tax credits that apply to them, and by offering this free assistance we can make sure that happens,”  Gov. Cuomo stated. “This is an important resource for people to utilize, and I’m proud that our administration is continuing to increase our support to taxpayers statewide. With the April 15 filing deadline just a few months away, I encourage all New Yorkers who qualify to take advantage of this free service.”

According to officials, more than 5,000 taxpayers used the state’s free e-filing centers during the January to April filing season in 2015.

The IRS and AARP will also offer a directory of 800-plus sites, where certified volunteers will be available to help eligible taxpayers prepare and e-file their taxes during this year’s tax season.

The free service will be available to individuals and families earning $54,000 or less per year, and a list of sites is available at
