Rochester, NY — As part of its 60th anniversary celebration, Action for a Better Community (ABC) is proud to present the “Be the Healing” Rochester Symposium featuring renowned author, educator, and social justice advocate Dr. Joy DeGruy. This transformative, one-day event will take place on Friday, April 11, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Temple B’rith Kodesh, 2131 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY.
The symposium will bring together individuals and communities for an immersive experience focused on healing and empowerment. Dr. DeGruy will lead sessions addressing social-emotional development,
spiritual health, restorative justice, and the lasting impact of trauma on individuals and communities. Her 3M Relationship Approach Model—Multidisciplinary, Multi-Systemic, and Multicultural—will be the guiding framework for the day’s dialogue and workshops.
“When you understand that something is wrong, you have an obligation to do something about it,” said Dr.
DeGruy in a recent public message. “Healing begins when we acknowledge truth, connect in humanity, and
commit to action.”
Participants will explore:
The vestiges of historical and generational trauma
The role of mental health and reducing stress in healing
The Oneness of Humanity as a foundation for justice and restoration
Dr. DeGruy emphasizes the importance of collective healing: “We must move beyond survival to thriving by addressing trauma at its roots and embracing our shared humanity,” expressed Jerome Underwood, President and CEO of ABC. adds:
Underwood adds, “The current national environment challenges our community in ways never before imagined. On top of the stress and trauma of poverty and exclusion experienced by many in our community, there is now the added stress of uncertainty. The ‘helpers’ need help; teachers, counselors and service providers need healing. ABC is proud to collaborate with Dr. Joy DeGruy and Be The Healing Inc. to offer this special symposium to Rochester’s helpers and healers.”
The Be the Healing Rochester Symposium is part of ABC’s year-long effort to celebrate six decades of service by empowering communities and inspiring change across the Greater Rochester area. A generous grant from The Wayfarer Foundation has helped to sponsor this Symposium.
