Bank of America announced that two Rochester students were selected as Student Leaders® (#BofAStudentLeaders). Student Leaders is an eight-week paid summer internship that connects students to employment, skills development and service. These community-minded students—one rising high school senior and one recent graduate—will gain work and leadership experience and receive financial education coaching from Bank of America’s Better Money Habits curriculum while working with local nonprofit, United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes, all while earning competitive wages.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary year, the Student Leaders program recognizes 300 community-focused juniors and seniors from across the U.S. annually. Since 2004, Student Leaders has engaged more than 4,500 students and invested $42 million in more than 500 local nonprofits as a critical part of the bank’s long-standing effort to build pathways to economic mobility across nearly 100 markets.

“Bank of America is committed to supporting Rochester’s community and its long-term economic growth,” said Colleen Matteson, president, Bank of America Rochester. “Our Student Leaders program prepares a diverse pipeline of community-minded students to be successful in the local workforce. The exceptional teens selected for the Student Leaders program will not only gain practical work and life experience but will help United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes provide resources in health, education and economic mobility to our community.”

The class of 2024 Rochester Bank of America Student Leaders are:

  • Tyla Jackson is a recent graduate of Gates Chili High School and will attend the University of Buffalo in the fall. She was the senior editor of the school’s yearbook, where she led her fellow classmates in creating and distributing the publication. Tyla also participated in Student Government, where she was Class Vice President and responsible for coordinating school-wide events and fundraisers.

  • Mohammed Ghassat is a rising high school senior at Brighton High. He is a member of his school’s track and field and cross-country teams. Mohammed makes sure that his fellow teammates are set up for success.

The Student Leaders recently returned from a week-long, all expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. for a national leadership summit where they learned how nonprofits, governments and businesses collaborate to meet local needs.
