Genesee Valley Park Pool and Durand Eastman Beach to Open Monday, June 24

City Releases Summer Aquatics Schedule to Include Free Swim Lessons, Expanded Open Swim Sessions

Starting Monday, June 24, area residents will have more options to cool off as the City’s Genesee Vally Genesee Valley Park (GVP) Sports Complex Outdoor Pool, 131 Elmwood Ave. and the Durand Eastman Beach, 1250 Lakeshore Blvd. open for the summer season. While swimming is free at Durand Eastman, the Mayor has waived weekend and some weekday swimming fees at the GVP pool.

From Monday, June 24 through Sunday, July 7, the GVP pool will be open with the following schedule:

Open Swim

* Monday to Friday

* 10 a.m. to 12 noon

* 1 to 4:45 p.m.

* 6 to 8 p.m.

* Saturday and Sunday

* 12 noon to 3:45 p.m. (free)

Adult Lap Swim (ages 18 and up)

* Monday to Friday

* 12 noon to 1 p.m. (free)

* 5 to 6 p.m.

* Saturday and Sunday

* 4 to 6 p.m.

During Cool Sweeps the GVP pool will be open 12 noon to 8 p.m. for open swim (fees apply).

From Monday, July 8 through Monday September 2, the GVP pool will change to the following schedule:

Open Swim

* Monday to Friday

* 1 to 4:45 p.m.

* 6 to 8 p.m.

* Saturday and Sunday

* 12 noon to 3:45 p.m. (free)

Adult Lap Swim (ages 18 and up)

* Monday to Friday

* 12 noon to 1 p.m. (free)

* 5 to 6 p.m.

* Saturday and Sunday

* 4 to 6 p.m.

During Cool Sweeps the GVP pool will be open 12 noon to 8 p.m. for open swim (fees apply).

Unless otherwise noted above, admission fees at the GVP pool are $1 for youth ages 17 and under, and $3 for adults. Season passes are available for $40 and entrance for children ages 5 and under is free when accompanied by an adult.

Located in Genesee Valley Park, the GVP Sports Complex is an all-season facility has an outdoor, Olympic-sized swimming pool that includes a water slide, along with a ramp and portable lift to assist persons with disabilities. The facility also offers a full locker room. For more information, call 428-7888.

Starting June 24, the Durand Eastman beach will be open for swimming with lifeguards on duty from 12 noon to 6 p.m., seven days a week.

Durand Eastman Beach consists of 5,000 feet of Lake Ontario waterfront in Durand Eastman Park, which features steep wooded slopes, valleys, scenic vistas, small lakes, and assorted wildlife.

For daily water conditions and to ensure the beach is open for swimming, call the Monroe County Beach Information Line at (585) 753-5887. The hotline is updated each morning.

Starting Monday, July 1, the pools at the Adams Street R-Center, 85 Adams St., and the Jackson R-Center, 485 N. Clinton Ave. will have free open swimming from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Beginning July 8, free swim lessons will be provided at three pools Monday through Thursdays at the GVP, Adams, and Jackson R-Center pools. Pre-registration at R-Central is required (www.cityofrochester.gov/R-Central).

* Session 1 (July 8 through July 25)

* Session 2 (July 29 through August 15)

In addition to pools and the beach, City aquatics offerings include spray parks and spray features. They are currently open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

* Edgerton R-Center, 41 Backus St.

* David F. Gantt R-Center, 700 North St.

* Humboldt R-Center, 1045 Atlantic Ave.,

* Thomas P. Ryan R-Center, 530 Webster Ave.

* Roxie Ann Sinkler R-Center, 75 Grover St.

* Tyshaun Cauldwell R-Center for Hope, 524 Campbell St.

The following Spray features are for designed children ages 6 and younger:

* Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park play area, 353 Court St.

* Fourth and Peck Park, corner of Fourth and Peck Street

* Troup Street Park and Playground, 210-266 Troup St.

On Sunday June 16, Mayor Evans initiated a Cool Sweep operation for Monday, June 17 through Friday, June 21. During Cool Sweeps, City R-Centers, Durand Eastman beach, pools, spray and splash parks, and some City branch libraries may open for extended hours.
