Evans Announces Bid for Second Term as Sinha Promises Change
Malik Evans officially launched his reelection campaign Friday but will face at least one challenger. Shashi Sinha, a local technology director pledging an “outsider perspective” has entered the 2025 race for Rochester mayor.
Evans, who won election to the mayors office in 2021, announced his bid at a community event, highlighting ongoing efforts to boost public safety, tackle gun violence and stimulate economic growth. Evans pointed to initiatives he championed in his first term, including the expansion of youth programs and increased community engagement.
“It has been an honor to serve as Rochester’s mayor over the last three-plus years,” Evans said. “While we have come a long way since 2021, our work is not done. I am looking forward to finishing the historic work we have started."
Sinha declared his candidacy earlier this week, describing himself as a political newcomer who would bring bold policies and innovative solutions to City Hall. Sinha says he wants to invest in neighborhood revitalization and address persistent inequalities by leveraging his background in education and technology.
“I’m running for mayor to ensure that everyone in Rochester has the chance to pursue their own American Dream,” he said. “I believe in a city where opportunity is accessible to everyone, where neighborhoods are safe, and where our local government truly listens and responds to the needs of its people.”
Though details of their platforms continue to emerge, the race has already drawn attention from community members looking for a leader who can build on existing progress while offering new perspectives on Rochester’s challenges. Evans, running on a record of collaboration and economic development, has said he welcomes any competition, describing it as vital for ensuring a healthy democratic process.
Both campaigns are expected to ramp up public appearances, fundraisers and volunteer outreach efforts in the coming months, as voters prepare to decide whether to give the incumbent mayor a second term or place their confidence in a challenger promising transformative change.
Both candidates are running on the democratic line and are gearing up for the primary election set for June 24. The general election is scheduled for November 4.
