Exploration Elementary Charter School for Science & Technology Welcomes Maya Crane as New Executive Director

Exploration Elementary Charter School for Science & Technology is proud to announce the appointment of Maya L. Crane, MSL, as its new Executive Director. A board member of Exploration Charter since 2018, Maya’s transition to Executive Director marks a pivotal moment in the school’s history. Her deep understanding of the school's mission, combined with her extensive experience in strategic leadership and equity advocacy, positions her to lead the school into its next phase of growth.


Maya brings over two decades of leadership in the nonprofit, public, and faith sectors, where she has consistently championed equity and sustainability. Her work at Connected Communities and the Rochester Area Community Foundation conveys her deep knowledge and dedication to this city, where she has driven impactful community engagement, increased funding for BIPOC-led organizations, and worked to revitalize neighborhoods. Additionally, through her consultancy work with Crane Solutions, Maya has supported numerous organizations in building sustainable infrastructures and driving systemic change.


Her leadership will be invaluable as Exploration Charter continues its mission of providing an inclusive and innovative education in science and technology. Maya’s ability to create equitable strategies, coupled with her collaborative approach, will ensure that the school remains at the forefront of educational excellence and community engagement.


Maya holds a master’s in Strategic Leadership from Roberts Wesleyan College and a Bachelor of Science in Business from Russell Sage College. She has held positions on several local boards, including serving as the incoming board chair for Hope585.

Exploration is performing at 9% proficient in ELA & 4% in Math. This is a failing school. It is and has been performing well below even RCSD. Many admin/principal changes and same board. Board needs to be investigated for for-profit activity as the same board as been operating the failing school since 2017/2018.
