From Peace to Chaos

Lydia Alston-Murphy

My name is Lydia Alston-Murphy, and I am a political editorial writer for the Minority Reporter.  I will be writing thought provoking articles with a focus on politics in all levels of government. I would like to hear from you; if you relate to an article, if I touched a nerve, or, if you have any questions you can post a comment below the article email me at alstonmurphy@gmail.com

I acknowledge and respect Former President Joe Biden’s and Former Vice President Kamala Harris’ peaceful transfer of power to Donald Trump and JD Vance.  The former President and Vice President’s commitment to democracy and oath of office is not forgotten and I thank them for their service.

During Biden’s final days in office, he granted additional pardons and commutations to nonviolent offenders, including Marcus Garvey posthumously, Biden’s family members and the House committee. In addition, he offered commutations to Dr. Anthony Fauci, General Mark Milley and former Congresswoman Liz Cheney.  The objective of Biden’s final Executive Order was to protect those that stood in the crosshairs of President Trump’s nonsensical vengeance.

The catalyst for President Trump’s retribution occurred when he chose not to concede and facilitate the transfer of power to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.  Trump instead, conjured the “Big Lie” and rallied his radical supporters to storm the Capital.  This mob assaulted Capitol Police, causing critical injuries, death and property damage. This act of domestic terrorism was referred to as a “peaceful protest and a love fest,” by President Trump and many Republicans.

As President Trump begins his second term, he is turning campaign promises into policies.  He has wielded his Executive Power to release the insurrectionists from prison, with the stroke of a pen, violent and nonviolent offenders are free. As a result of this unconstitutional Executive order to free the anarchists, the Capital police that testified to hold them accountable are more worried about their lives and the lives of their families.

Emboldened by Trump’s Presidential win and the receipt of   freedom, some insurrectionists have made claims to purchase firearms, others have made guarantees to go after those that held them accountable.  It is increasingly troubling but not surprising that this group of domestic terrorists have become more loyal to the Felon President and make it their obligation to carry out his wishes.

As President trump tries to fill his administration with men and women that are not fit for the office of the White House, his few days in office have included freeing insurrectionists, ending Biden’s border policies, the  implementation of  a far-reaching deportation program, ending birthright citizenship, cancelling the electric vehicle mandate and lastly, an end to any DEI and Civil Rights initiatives.  Surrounded by billionaires and loyalists, powered by control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, President Trump has begun to strip America of any semblance of democracy, equity or equality.

As predicted, the President’s governance will be copied and pasted from the Project 2025 Playbook. Most of his motivation to create this “Golden Age” he speaks of, will be illustrated from this playbook. The opinions of Senators that share the needs of their constituents will not be considered. The playbook, opinions and influences of billionaires the President fancies himself with, have taken center stage.

As I try to unpack the activities of the President’s first few days, the Executive Order to free the insurrectionists is one of the orders that causes concern. As a result, I struggle with the following questions: will the freed insurrectionists feel invincible because they have received a get out of jail free card?  What intended consequences will this country experience during this “above the law” administration’s tenure?  Will the charges of the insurrectionists be removed from their record with their release from prison? If you struggle with these questions or have other questions, add a post to the Minority Reporter’s Facebook Page or email me at alstonmurphy@gmail.com.  Please include the title of the op ed.
