Evoke: A Youthful Expression is now on display at the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, through March 9, 2025.

This vibrant exhibition, hosted in the museum’s Gallery Obscura, highlights creative works by nearly 40 student artists who participated in the In Control workshops, a program offered by Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York (PPCWNY).

The exhibit features six series of multimedia projects that include:

* Original clothing designs paired with photos of models at fashion shows

* Portraits exploring personal transformation during the In Control program

* Original songs written and performed by student artists

* Video pieces showcasing youth identity and empowerment

“We are thrilled to collaborate with In Control to showcase the voices of young artists in our community,” said Amy Schelemanow, director of exhibitions, publishing, and design at the museum. “Gallery Obscura aims to amplify regional youth creativity, and this multidisciplinary exhibition exemplifies the power of their messages and journeys.”

About In Control

For over 25 years, In Control has empowered Rochester’s youth through education, mentorship, and creative workshops. The program helps participants build skills in photography, fashion, media, music, dance, and culinary arts while focusing on key outcomes like decision-making, communication, and empowerment. It prioritizes inclusivity, offering opportunities to teens from all backgrounds regardless of race, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status.

The program’s mission is to equip young people with tools for personal and professional success while fostering informed decisions about their health and future.

The George Eastman Museum, established in 1947, is the world’s oldest photography museum and houses one of the largest film archives in the United States. Located on George Eastman’s historic Rochester estate, the museum is a hub for photography, film, and technology enthusiasts, offering extensive collections and educational programs.

The Gallery Obscura, a community-centered exhibition space, is dedicated to showcasing projects from local institutions, youth programs, and collaborative efforts. Its mission is to highlight creative voices from the Greater Rochester area and support community-based initiatives.
