Gov Hochul to Expand and add Red Light Cameras at Locations Around the State

Governor Kathy Hochul, last week, signed legislation to extend existing red light camera programs across the state and establish a new red light camera program in the Hudson Valley area.

The program, which does not include the Rochester area, is the largest expansion of the red light cameras in New York City’s history.

Back in 2010 the city of Rochester launched a red-light camera program that placed cameras at 32 intersections around the city. The program was canceled by Mayor Lovely Warren in 2017 due to backlash from the community stating the cameras was creating undue financial harm to the most marginalized communities.

“The safety of all New Yorkers is my top priority and we know that red light camera programs are effective in protecting New Yorkers from dangerous drivers,” Hochul said.

This legislation package will extend, expand, or create red light camera programs in the following areas:

New York City - extended and expanded

The City of White Plains - extended

The City of Albany - extended

Nassau County - extended

The Town of Greenburgh - a completely new program

The City of Mount Vernon - extended

The City of New Rochelle – extended

The program is receiving support from NYS Senate and Assembly democrats as well as Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson Howard.

“This legislation plays a critical role in our road safety action plan, and these traffic-calming measures will enhance the quality of life, mobility, and accessibility for our youth and seniors as they walk, drive, and bike throughout our community," Howard said.
