A father and son will make local history Thursday when they file petitions to run for office together in the City of Rochester, a first for Monroe County.

Clifford A. Florence Sr. is launching a campaign for Mayor of Rochester, while his son, Clifford A. Florence Jr., will seek a seat on the City Council. The two will submit their campaign petitions at the Monroe County Board of Elections at 2 p.m. today (April 3rd.)
Both men are direct descendants of the late Franklin D. Florence Sr., a prominent minister and civil rights leader known for his role in the 1964 Rochester race riots and his advocacy for racial equality in employment at companies like Eastman Kodak and Xerox.
"Given the decline in the quality of life and opportunity of the past five years in our great city, we felt compelled to run for public office to create the same positive change and hope that my father established in 1964," said Florence Sr. in a statement.
Florence Jr., who has been an active presence at City Council meetings, described feeling dismissed by local government and emphasized a need for leadership rooted in Rochester’s civil rights legacy.
“The only true form of hope comes from those who were raised in the rich history of our City,” he said. “I have never forgotten... those who brought forth ideas and change that gave people like my grandfather hope for a better, brighter tomorrow.”
Their campaigns are being driven by grassroots support from across the Rochester community.
Both candidates emphasized their commitment to uplifting city residents and restoring trust in local government.
