How We ROC: A Look Through Our Lenses Exhibit on Display at City Hall Link Gallery

An artist reception was held at the City Hall Link Gallery to celebrate the artwork of Rajae “Onis” Barnes-Wright and Allison McDonald and the inaugural installation of photographs of the City’s How We ROC program.

Funded through the City’s Percent for the Arts program, How We ROC is designed to provide local photographers with an opportunity to capture the essence of Rochester’s vibrant events and have their work displayed at the City Hall Link Gallery. Photographers receive media credentials to City-sponsored concerts, festivals and other events.

“We are committed to creating innovative ways to provide opportunities for local artists across all mediums,” said Mayor Evans. “Onis and Allison are the inaugural photographers of How We ROC, and we look forward to building on their success and expanding the project to even more photographers. Their exceptional work has beautifully captured the vibrancy, diversity, and unique character of our community and this dynamic exhibit is a must-see for everyone.”

Barnes-Wright is the owner of Onis Visuals and has a passion for visual storytelling and creating compelling images that resonate deeply with the human experience. Through his portraits, landscapes, and documentary-style photography, he captures the beauty and complexity of Black, Brown, and marginalized communities. His work challenges stereotypes and aims to inspire a deeper understanding of social struggles.

McDonald, owner of AAM Photo, has a background in photography and studio art. Known for her portraiture and documentary photography, Allison delves into the lives of her subjects, capturing their essence and surroundings. Her love for nature allows her to highlight subtle nuances, blending nature, beauty, and life experiences into compelling visual stories. Her work celebrates the strength and vibrancy of Rochester’s communities, offering a unique and intimate portrayal of the city’s everyday life.

The City is currently seeking photographers interested in taking part in future How We ROC galleries. Potential participants can view the Request for Proposal requirements at www.cityofrochester.gov/rfp-how-we-roc-photography-project. Participants selected for the program will receive $1,500, expanded-access media credentials to City-sponsored special events, and the opportunity to display their work in the City Hall Link Gallery.

The Link Gallery, located on the first floor of City Hall at 30 Church St., is open to the public Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and the gallery is handicapped accessible.
