International Fugitive Apprehended in Uganda and Extradited back to the United States
Rochester, NY - On January 10, 2025, David Johnson, 50, was extradited back to the United
States from Uganda by the United States Marshals Service. The Rochester resident was wanted by
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office on charges of Attempted Murder 2nd , Assault 1st and Attempted Arson
3rd. An Indictment warrant was issued for Johnson in November 2019 by the Monroe County Sherifs
Office. It is alleged that on August 30, 2019 on Augustine Street in the City of Rochester Johnson,
during a domestic dispute, poured a flammable liquid in different areas of his house. Johnson then
poured this same flammable liquid on his wife’s head, chest, and neck while threatening to kill her.
Johnson then lit his wife on fire before fleeing the scene. The victim suffered extreme burns and
serious injuries as a result of these actions.
Through various investigative efforts of the United States Marshals Service and the Monroe
County Sheriffs Department it was believed that Johnson immediately fled the country. The agencies
continued their efforts by requesting assistance of international partners in Jamaica in an attempt to
locate Johnson. In February 2024, the investigation determined that Johnson had fled to Uganda under
an alias. With the assistance of the U.S Marshals Office of International Affairs and the State
Department of Diplomatic Security Service, Johnson was subsequently arrested in Kampala, Uganda on
November 29, 2024. Johnson was held in Uganda on a provisional arrest warrant until his return back
to the United States on January 10th .
Johnson was arraigned on January 13, 2025 in front of Monroe County Court Judge Randel on
the Indictment warrant that was issued and held on no bail.
United States Marshal Charles Salina stated the following “Thank you for the continuous
dedication from the Deputy U.S. Marshals and the Monroe County Sheriffs Deputies who refused to let
this case go cold. Their commitment to this investigation brought a violent and dangerous fugitive to
justice.”
“This effort demonstrates how our local, state and federal partners work together in a global
search for justice,” said Monroe County Sheriff Todd K. Baxter. “Countless hours, over several years to
hold the individual responsible for this terrible crime, accountable. The deputies and our partners never
let go of the case and they got him.”
The US Marshals Service would like to thank the following agencies for the collaborative efforts:
The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Rochester Police
Department, Department of Justice Office of International Affairs, State Department of Diplomatic
Security Service and The Western District of New York U.S Attorney’s Office.
