Kail’an Townsend, RCSD School No. 22 Student Honored Nationally for Doing the Right Thing

Kail’an Townsend, a fifth grader at Abraham Lincoln School No. 22, has captured national attention for her exceptional character and leadership. This inspiring young leader was recently featured on the Tamron Hall Show, a nationally acclaimed daytime talk show.

When Kail’an was a student at Dr. Walter Cooper Academy School No. 10, during the 2023 – 24 school year, there was a fight between classmates.  Instead of standing by or joining in, Kail’an ran to find a teacher to intervene.  Her teacher, Ms. Kenisha Campbell, was so moved by Kail’an’s actions that she recorded a video message on the show to celebrate her student. “Way to go, Kail’an,” said Campbell. “Keep doing the great work of being a leader.”

Kail'an’s courage earned her the “Do the Right Thing” award last May, presented by News 10NBC and the Rochester Police Department. This prestigious local honor highlights young individuals who exemplify integrity and positive behavior. Now, Kail’an’s actions have become a shining example on a national stage.

Adding to the excitement, one of Kail’an’s favorite gospel artists, Kirk Franklin, recorded a message that aired during her appearance on the show. “I am a fan and am so proud of you,” Franklin said. “We need more of you. We need you to keep standing and being the superpower that you are. The world is better because of you.”

The celebration did not stop there. A woman-owned jewelry company, Little Words Project, honored Kail’an with custom friendship bracelets to acknowledge her leadership and kindness. “They think you are a hero,” said Hall. “They have made specific bracelets for you because you did the right thing.”
