More Than 1,300 Apply for New York State Jobs After Launch of ‘You’re Hired’ Initiative

New York's "You're Hired" initiative, launched three weeks ago to assist displaced federal workers, has received over 1,300 applications, Governor Kathy Hochul announced Thursday. The program aims to fill more than 7,000 state government positions across various fields, including healthcare, engineering, and legal services.
"New York values public servants," Hochul said in a statement. "We'll continue to ensure that talented, experienced federal workers know about our state workforce opportunities and all the resources available to them."
To date, state agencies have conducted over 100 interviews and extended 28 job offers. Additionally, more than 250 individuals have registered for career webinars or accessed online career support resources. The StateJobsNY website has experienced a surge in traffic, with over 4 million views and approximately 1.2 million users—1 million of whom are new visitors, according to the governor's office.
The initiative comes in response to significant federal workforce reductions under the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk. These reductions have affected multiple agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which announced plans to lay off 10,000 employees and reduce its overall workforce by 20,000 as part of a major restructuring. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is also drafting plans to slash its 90,000-person workforce in half.
These federal layoffs have had widespread impacts, with Washington D.C. projected to lose approximately 18,900 jobs. Other cities, including Baltimore, Kansas City, San Antonio, Ogden, and Memphis, are also expected to experience significant job losses
In response, New York State is actively promoting the "You're Hired" campaign through social media, email outreach, and direct engagement with affected workers. State agencies such as the Office of General Services, Department of Civil Service, and Office of Information Technology Services are among those actively hiring. M
