New NYS FAFSA Ready Training Program to Empower Students, Counselors with College Financial Aid Support

Submitted Content

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) has announced the launch of the NYS FAFSA Ready Training Program, a new initiative designed to equip high school counselors, community partners, and support professionals with the resources and expertise needed to assist students in completing financial aid applications. This includes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), and the DREAM Act applications.

“This initiative will provide school counselors, community partners, and others with the tools they need to support students through the financial aid process,” said State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa. “It is particularly valuable for families new to the college application process.”

The program is a key step in advancing Governor Kathy Hochul’s Universal FAFSA Completion Legislation, which aims to increase FAFSA participation rates across the state. HESC is actively expanding partnerships with community organizations, youth programs, nonprofit agencies, and local support networks to ensure that more students receive guidance in navigating the financial aid process.

HESC President Dr. Guillermo Linares emphasized the significance of the program, stating, “At HESC, our goal has always been to help students pay for college, and the NYS FAFSA Ready Training Program is another vital tool to ensure nothing stands between students and the financial aid they need to achieve their dreams.”

The NYS FAFSA Ready Training Program provides dedicated events, live training sessions, and valuable resources to help educators and community partners better support students and families. Key training topics include:

  • FAFSA Completion Initiative: This module provides schools with access to student FAFSA and TAP completion data, helping counselors identify students who may be struggling with their applications. The initiative supports Governor Hochul’s Universal FAFSA Completion goals by enabling counselors to track progress and implement strategies to assist students in completing their forms.

  • Supporting Students Through the FAFSA Process: This session empowers counselors and educators with a step-by-step walkthrough of the FAFSA application, offering clear explanations, actionable tips, and solutions to common challenges such as data entry errors, verification requirements, and eligibility concerns.

  • NYS TAP and DREAM Act Applications: This module provides detailed guidance on the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and the DREAM Act, ensuring that students receive the support they need to access state financial aid. Counselors will learn how to navigate both application processes, identify eligible students, and avoid common mistakes.

In 2023, more than $225 million in federal financial aid went unclaimed by New York State students. The NYS FAFSA Ready Training Program seeks to address this gap by ensuring that educators and community partners are well-equipped to assist students in securing the financial resources they need for higher education.
