NYS Cracks downs on Impaired Driving Ahead of Super Bowl Statewide Enforcement Runs Feb. 3-9
ALBANY, N.Y. — Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a statewide crackdown on impaired driving in the lead-up to Super Bowl Sunday. From Feb. 3 to Feb. 9, New York State Police and local law enforcement will increase patrols, conduct sobriety checkpoints, and target underage drinking as part of a national enforcement initiative funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
“As fans gather to watch the Super Bowl, we are ramping up enforcement to protect New Yorkers from the dangers of impaired and reckless driving,” Hochul said. “There is zero tolerance for putting lives at risk, and I urge everyone to plan ahead and make responsible choices.”
During the 2024 Super Bowl weekend campaign, law enforcement made 262 impaired driving arrests and issued 8,388 tickets.
Safety Reminders for Super Bowl Celebrations:
Always drive sober. Even one drink can be too many.
Plan ahead: Use a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare.
Hosts should help guests arrange safe rides home.
Report suspected impaired drivers to law enforcement.
Take keys away from anyone attempting to drive under the influence.
New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James emphasized that drivers should expect heightened enforcement efforts, including checkpoints and patrols targeting underage drinking and illegal sales to minors.
"Our Troopers will also focus on keeping motorists and pedestrians safe by identifying drivers illegally using handheld devices. Partnering with local law enforcement is essential to saving lives and keeping drunk drivers off our roads,” James said.
New Yorkers can use the “Have a Plan” mobile app to find taxis, designate drivers, and learn about DWI laws and penalties, available for Apple, Android and Windows smartphones.
“Don’t fumble with impaired driving,” said Shawn Heubusch, president of the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police. “If you’re celebrating, make the right call—plan for a designated driver, use a rideshare, or take public transportation. Let’s work together to prevent tragedies and ensure everyone gets home safely.”
