RCSD Offers Emotional Support Resources Following Student Death
In the wake of a tragic incident at the School of the Arts, the Rochester City School District (RCSD) is extending emotional and mental health resources to families throughout the district.
A student from the School of the Arts recently died after falling from a rooftop, prompting an outpouring of grief and concern across the community. In response, Interim Superintendent Dr. Demario Strickland issued a heartfelt letter expressing condolences and outlining available support services.
“I am deeply heartbroken by the loss our School of the Arts community is experiencing as they grieve the passing of one of their students,” Strickland wrote. “Losing a young life is an unimaginable tragedy, and our hearts go out to the student’s family, friends, staff, and everyone impacted.”
To support students, families, and staff during this time, RCSD has ensured that every school is equipped with Social Workers and School Counselors who can offer personalized support and make referrals for additional mental health care when needed.
Strickland emphasized the importance of having open conversations about loss and emotional well-being. “We recognize that conversations about loss and grief—especially in the wake of such a tragedy—can be difficult,” he said. “To assist families in speaking with their children about suicide and emotional well-being, we have compiled resources.”
Families are encouraged to access the district’s collection of mental health, behavioral, and emotional support materials by visiting bit.ly/3XCdypc.
“There is no greater loss than that of a child,” Strickland said. “I know our entire RCSD community stands together in expressing our deepest condolences to the SOTA community.”
RCSD is urging community members to support one another with compassion during this time of mourning.
