The family of Robert Brooks, a Greece, NY man who tragically died after being severely beaten at Marcy Correctional Facility, announced on Wednesday that they have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit. They are holding New York State prison officials and others accountable for the incident.

During a press conference streamed live by WHEC, the Brooks family, surrounded by supporters and legal counsel, shared their account of the events and demanded justice. They says that Robert Brooks was subjected to excessive force by correction officers while incarcerated at Marcy Correctional Facility. The resulting injuries were so severe that Brooks later died. His family’s attorneys argue that this violence violated his constitutional rights, prompting the lawsuit.

“We want accountability,” a family spokesperson stated at the press conference. “We want to ensure that no other family endures the heartbreak, fear, and uncertainty we’ve faced. This lawsuit is about sending a message: brutality against incarcerated individuals will not be tolerated.”

The family’s attorneys emphasized that the lawsuit is part of a broader effort to expose what they describe as a systemic issue within correctional facilities. Their complaint seeks both monetary damages and injunctive relief to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

While the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) has yet to provide a detailed response to the lawsuit, they have previously stated that they thoroughly investigate all allegations of misconduct and take appropriate disciplinary action when misconduct is substantiated.

The Brooks family and their attorneys reiterated their call for an independent investigation into the incident and urged anyone with information regarding conditions or conduct at Marcy Correctional Facility to come forward.

As the legal process moves forward, the family remains hopeful for a prompt and just resolution, with further updates on the lawsuit and court proceedings expected in the coming weeks.
