The Rochester City School District Board of Education has named Dr. Eric Jay Rosser as its next superintendent, effective July 1.
Rosser, an educational leader with more than 24 years of experience in school turnaround, leadership, and operational management, previously served as superintendent of the Poughkeepsie City School District. He succeeds Interim Superintendent Dr. Demario Strickland, who will assist in the transition.
“I am truly honored to serve as superintendent of the Rochester City School District,” Rosser said in a statement. “Joining this incredible community is both humbling and exciting, and I look forward to collaborating with educators, staff, parents, students, and community members to expand opportunities for all students.”
Before his tenure in Poughkeepsie, Rosser was associate superintendent of Buffalo Public Schools, where he co-developed the district’s Student Success Plan. His leadership helped improve graduation rates, English Language Arts and math proficiency, and accountability measures. He has also held leadership roles in Washington, D.C., overseeing the K–12 State Accountability System, and in Atlanta Public Schools, where he led reform efforts for some of the district’s lowest-performing schools.
Board President Camille Simmons expressed confidence in Rosser’s ability to lead the district.
“His extensive experience, commitment to equity, and proven track record of improving student outcomes make him the right leader to guide our district toward a brighter future,” Simmons said.
The Board of Education also recognized Strickland for his service as interim superintendent.
Rosser’s appointment aligns with the district’s commitment to student success, equity, and excellence. The board encourages students, families, educators, and community members to welcome Rosser as he steps into his new role.
