Two suspects connected to the death of 5-year-old Malakai Stovall and the injuries of two firefighters were arraigned in court today.

Tiakalya, 21, and Taquida Hendrix, 31, were arrested by the U.S. Marshal's Task Force on Tuesday. The women were arrested eight days after a fire broke out at a duplex on Portland Avenue. The sisters were arraigned on Wednesday morning, facing charges of second-degree murder for their alleged involvement in the incident, which resulted in the death of a 5-year-old boy named Malakai Stovall. During the arraignment, members of Malakai's family wore shirts with his picture, and his mother shouted his name as one suspect left the courtroom.

According to reports, the Red Cross is assisting the families displaced by the fire.

Mayor Malik Evans expressed the city's commitment to holding those responsible accountable. Evans stated, "I hope this sends a message to those that think they can wreak havoc in our city. We will hunt you down and make sure you will be held accountable."

Multiple agencies, including the ATF, Rochester Police, and Fire Departments investigated the incident. Authorities emphasized the collaboration among law enforcement agencies highlighting the importance of a unified approach in addressing crimes.

Law enforcement asserted this event emphasizes the significance of fire safety and prevention measures in residential areas. They believe the swift spread of the fire underscores the potential dangers and stresses the importance of vigilance and preparedness within communities.
