The Black Cinema Series Showcasing the Film "SING SING"
The Black Cinema Series, a collaboration between the Rochester Association of Black Journalists (RABJ) and the Little Theatre, will be showcasing the film "SING SING" on Friday, August 23rd at 7:00 p.m. The screening will be held at The Little (Theater 5) located at 8 Winthrop St. in the East End District. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
"SING SING" tells the story of Divine G (Colman Domingo), a man wrongly imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he did not commit. While incarcerated, Divine G discovers a sense of purpose by participating in a theater group alongside other imprisoned men. This inspiring film highlights themes of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art. The cast includes a remarkable ensemble of formerly incarcerated actors.
Following the screening, there will be a post-screening discussion featuring esteemed panelists. Miquel Powell, the Executive Director and Founder of The Reentry & Community Development Center, Inc. (RCDC-17), will be one of the panelists. Powell is dedicated to supporting individuals who have recently been released from jail or prison, as well as those struggling with substance abuse disorders. Additionally, Powell is a certified substance abuse counselor at a local nonprofit organization.
Shanique Byrd, the Publisher and Editor of Tocsin, will also be participating in the panel discussion. Tocsin is a publication that focuses on giving a voice to marginalized communities and incarcerated individuals. Through their magazine, podcast, and community reporting, Tocsin aims to promote social justice and combat racism.
Tickets for the event can be purchased in advance online, at the box office during open hours, or at the door on the day of the screening. Admission prices are $11, with a discounted rate of $7 available for seniors, students, and military personnel. Group prices can be arranged in advance through the business office.
