Visual Studies Workshop Presents Film Screening With Christopher Harris

Visual Studies Workshop (VSW) will host acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Harris for a special salon event and film screening on Wednesday, May 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at its new theater located at 36 King St.

Christopher Harris creates films and installations that examine African American historiography through the lens of experimental media. His body of work spans 16mm film, HD video and multimedia installation.


As part of VSW’s In Dialogue series, Harris will present a curated program that pairs selections from the VSW archive with several of his own works, including his latest film, Speaking in Tongues: Take One. Harris will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A. Films will be screened in their original formats, including 16mm and 35mm film.

Known for his experimental approach to filmmaking, Harris creates visually rich works that explore African American history and culture through avant-garde techniques. His films draw on influences from jazz, archival media and experimental cinema, using duration, silence and absence to underscore the political and poetic potential of the moving image.


This event will be held in VSW’s new state-of-the-art, 80-seat theater. Tickets are available with a suggested $10 donation and are free for VSW members.

The Visual Studies Workshop was founded in 1969 by photographer, educator and curator Nathan Lyons, Visual Studies Workshop is a nonprofit organization that supports experimental and expansive approaches to photography and media arts. VSW fosters community through exhibitions, publications and artist residencies, and houses a vast archive of photography and moving image collections, along with an extensive art library.
